Les pubs d'Apple à San Francisco / Latest Apple Ad Campaign

WARNING: this post may be offensive to die-hard Mac fans!

;-)

It had been a long, long time since I didn't talk about Apple or one of its products on this blog. Well, here you go! This blue poster you see on that column in the back is the new ad campaign plastered all over the Financial District since Apple announced the release of their MacBook Pro a few days ago.

Montgomery Cable Car Stop

What, you can't read it from here? You want to see it closer? OK. Here you go.
Quoi vous n'arrivez pas à lire? Plus près? OK. Voilà.

"What' an Intel chip doing in a Mac? A whole lot more than it's ever done in a PC."

Give me a break! Now look here, Apple. We don't question you always had the better computer to start with.

And even though I'm on my third iPod now (due to a manufacturer's hardware defect in the first two ones, not to this user's mishandling - just had to say that!!!), I wouldn't even dream of arguing that the iPod isn't a cool product either; it is. Hats off.

L'iPod? Chapeau bas.

Even the various iPod ad campaigns you guys came up with were simply pure genius. In fact, these ads were so catchy and clever that other companies even tried to capitalize on the popularity of the product (see iPod my baby , it's really worth the click!)

And to be completely honest, I do like Macs. Overpriced? Without a doubt. But I still think the OS is kind of cool. Almost bought one, in fact.

Chers? Sans aucun doute. Mais l'OS est quand meme sympa. Failli en acheter un d'ailleurs.

But this latest ad campaign? In my opinion, it's just arrogant and juvenile and does absolutely nothing for Apple's image.

So, Apple, why don't you do yourself a favor and lose the attitude, hmmm? Or could it be that you simply want to give people a preview of what they may expect when dealing with the so-called "geniuses" with a superiority complex you have working tech support at your local Bay Area stores? Is that it?

Apple Store at Powell, SF

I think if I were a PC manufacturer right now, I'd launch an ad campaign saying "Hey, Mac, what's with the 'tude, dude? Drop the act, it just ain't cool anymore." Or something like that. You know what I mean.

Si j'étais fabriquant de PC, je lancerais à mon tour une campagne publicitaire disant "Eh, Mac, laisse tomber l'attitude, on commence à fatiguer grave." Quelque chose comme ça. Vous voyez ce que je veux dire.

MacWorld, Photograph: John Dvorak, PC Mag

Ok. Maybe not everybody got rattled by the ad campaign: here is a good review from PC Mag on the new iMac Intel Core Duo. But you should probably also check out what John Dvorak (PC Mag) had to say earlier this month:

Bon.

For laughs: my very 1st personal computer: an Apple IIe!

"... As far as I'm concerned Apple's credibility is now suspect on all levels. More interesting were the rather insulting ads Apple showed regarding these chips indicating that any use before Apple was essentially a crummy loser. This, of course referred to Windows I guess. Apparently Apple is unaware of the fact that Linux runs at blazing speed on these chips too..."

CompUSA on Market St. also carries a good selection of Apple products

Personally, if I had had to design an ad campaign for Apple, I would have tried wo win over the PC crowd with a little more subtlety and tact. The big question still remains: how well will the public receive the new product on the market? Or even ... what is the future of Apple?

Looking at your feet / Quand on regarde par terre

California St. Cable Car

It's always a good idea to look where your feet are going, not only to avoid falling down or walking on stuff (ahem, this one was for the Parisians), but also because you never know what you're gonna find. When I was a kid, I used to find mostly coins on the sidewalk, but you really never know, you could find anything. One time, for instance, I found a flower growing smack in the concrete of a Manhattan sidewalk!

And sometimes, you can even find ideas, like this one, for instance, photographed a couple of days ago on a San Francisco sidewalk of the Financial District ...

Personally, after last week's anti-abortion demonstration, I find it rather uplifting.

What's new with you? Quoi de neuf chez vous?

Not much here. Last week I went to the doctor to have them look at my ankle since it's been bothering me for so long ... long story short ... they put it in a cast! As you can see, though, either it was a Christmas left over, or they knew I was coming because the only color they had left is ... tomato red! I had seen color-casts before but never close up. They're really kind of cool and because they're made of fiberglass, they're much lighter than actual plaster. I don't actually recommend it but if you absolutely have to have a cast, then go with that one instead. One draw back, though, is that people won't be able to write on it ...

It's really not as bad as it looks, in fact, it looks like it's helping. However, it's kind of a pain to get around, and small things we tend to take for granted like trying to get around in public transportation, taking a shower, or taking the garbage out down 2 flights of stairs (without elevator, of course), become much more time-consuming and complicated tasks... Let's just say it, this thing is kind of a pain in the ass.

Ralentir vous laisse voir des trucs sympas/Slowing down allows you to smell the flowers

On the plus side, having to slow down is really not that bad once you get used to it. I could even say it's kind of relaxing. Still, I'll be glad when they take this thing out!

Ceci dit, ça me fera bien plaisir quand on enlevera ce truc!

Close up of the previous shot / Zoom-in de la photo du dessus

PS. By the way, as you can probably see on one of the pictures, I have cable service again. Don't know for how long, but right now it works. The timing couldn't be better! :-)

Abortion (again?!!) / Avortement (Encore?!!) (En/Fr)

Photograph San Francisco Chronicle

Not your usual San Francisco picture, I'll give you that. An estimated 15,000 people demonstrated today against abortion, here in San Francisco. Abortion was legalized in the United States 33 years ago, yet never quite seems like an acquired right. See the entire article on the site of the San Francisco Chronicle. Personally, seeing all these people on the local news tonight shocked the hell out of me. I thought the 70's were long gone, but maybe the mentalities haven't changed that much. Wait a minute. Did I say 70's? Maybe I meant the 50's!

Dimanche matin / Sunday morning

I show up at the coffee shop this morning, and my favorite table by the window is empty, waiting for me. Cool! But wait, what's this soft music I hear through my earpods instead of that horrible loud crap they usually play? Is it Brassens? Yes, it sure is!!! Better and better!

My favorite table (I had remembered my cable that day)/ Table préferée (avec la ralonge ce jour là)

I then walk up to the counter and my favorite coffee, Costa Rican (in pink on the photograph), is here today. Excellent! Will the good news ever stop? I wonder ... could it be that I'm now riding the wave instead of drowing in it? I don't know but I like it!

So I start up my laptop, pull my work out of my back-pack, already happy about things going so well, even manage to get a free wireless connection, hey, that's always a good thing. But wait... what now? The battery is terribly low ... and I forgot the electrical cable at home! Figures... Laptops are a cool invention but pretty useless without juice!

A potential 4-legged friend / Un ami à 4 pattes

Well, aside for that, everything's going relatively well, and I should be able to post and surf again in a few days. For now, the access is limitted and unpredictable. See you soon!

A bientôt!

No Internet!!! Pas d'internet!!!

Well, this is it. What I thought was a temporary Internet service interruption caused by the recent storms and other weather-related issues we had over the holidays in California, is turning out to be a much bigger deal and I pretty much no longer have Internet at home (or TV reception) or very rarely.

Ben voila.

After having enjoyed for months all the comforts of Comcast high-speed cable internet at home, it looks like I'm no longer going to be able to get that - long and convoluted story, trust me, you don't want to hear it, unless you never had to deal with a cable company or a large ISP before, in which case let me tell you, when things work everybody's happy, but when they don't, you're in for a world of frustration.

Anyway, I'm now looking for an equivalent high-speed connection replacement, so I thought I'd run a quick survey and find-out what you guys are using for high-speed internet (not interested in dial-up). Does anybody have any recommendations? How about wireless?

Wi-fi?

Tomate's weekly post might return tomorrow or in a couple of days, depending on the connection ... and whether or not Blogger will let me upload my $!$@#@#$ pictures! Arrrghhhhhh!!!! Some days are like that! (sigh)

(soupir)

And you, how did you start the new year?

By the way: those of you who have my Comcast e-mail address, expect a change in the next couple of weeks. When you get the notice, please update your addressbook accordingly ... FAST!

Brokeback Mountain (En/Fr)

Brokeback Mountain

(BE SURE TO CHECK THE SECTION "SHARE YOUR STORY" ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SPLASH PAGE OF BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN TO SEE OTHER VIEWERS' TOUCHING COMMENTS AND STORIES FROM ALL OVER)

WARNING: THIS TEXT MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS - ATTENTION: CE TEXTE CONTIENT QUELQUES DETAILS SUR LE FILM

Following the recent recommendations of NoComment, fellow blogger in San Diego, I finally went to see Brokeback Mountain last week. There are many reviews and commentaries out there on the Net already. Here is a couple I like; one in English, written by Mick LaSalle, critic at the San Francisco Chronicle, and another one in French, written by Sale Bête, a fellow blogger in New York.

What did I think of it? Hard to say much without giving the story away, but I can try. First and without hesitation, this is one of the best films I've ever seen: the visuals are absolutely stunning, the acting is superb, especially Heath Ledger's (one cannot help but wonder if he really is acting?!), and most importantly, the story feels extremely real. I think this last element is probably why the film gets to the audience the way it does; throughout the entire movie, the story feels authentic and the emotions, both on screen and in the audience, are palpable.

A word of warning, though: if you're going in "just to see a gay movie" you may be in for a disappointement. While the main characters may be gay (or are they? there is some ambiguity about that for a while during the movie), the story is really about two people like you and me being caught in their emotions and trying to deal with it as best they can in a given environment.

In many ways, this movie reminded me a lot of Bridges of Madison County, in that Madison County, too, depicted a character struggling to reconcile her one true love in life with the other demands of life, and it, too, was filmed in a similar rural setting, though not as beautiful as Brokeback's (in my opinion, of course).

If you are a non-native English speaker and there are no subtitles in the theater, you may have some trouble understanding one of the guys at first, I know I did. But believe me also when I tell you that the very few words you may be missing now and then will not take away from the story in any way, because much of the story in that movie is told between the lines.

The soundtrack is also very good. The movie ends appropriately with the Dylan song, He Was a Friend of Mine, interpreted by Willie Nelson.

I cried copiously at the end of the movie, just like I did at the end of Bridges of Madison County. I wept, here, mostly because even though Brokeback's story is supposed to take place circa 1963 rural America, I find it very hard to believe that things could have changed that much in these parts of the country; in fact I'm convinced they haven't.

I also cried for all the people who have been (or still are) locked in hopeless or loveless relationships, and for those who haven't been lucky enough to be able to pursue a relationship with the one they love, for whatever reason.

Truthfully, I think I also cried simply because I haven't seen a love story quite like this one, close up and personal, real or at the movies, in a very long time.

No, this movie isn't "just a gay movie," it is much more than that. And just because I say I cried, doesn't mean the experience was negative or depressing, quite the contrary, in fact! But don't take my word for it, go check it out for yourselves. In fact, I'll tell you what, if you're in the neighborhood, I'll go with you, because I definitely want to see that one again!
