MacWorld again (inside)/ Encore MacWorld (à l'intérieur)

Since the response to my last post was so overwhelming (ahem), I thought you guys would totally enjoy another post about MacWorld 2007. ;) Of course, by now, the Internet is shock full of iPhone pictures, and all self-respecting geeks have already read cover to cover everything there was to know about the expo. So why the second post? Er... why not? And besides, you haven't seen my iPhone pictures yet, have you? So there.

Registration process was incredibly quick and painless. Very impressive.
L'enregistrement était sans douleur et ultra-rapide. Très impressionnant.

For those of you who have never been to a computer show, well, it's no different than any other show, I suppose. Imagine a huge indoor space occupied by a large number of booths representing all the various companies exhibiting the new products and services coming into the market. Many have set up stages and give presentations and/or demos, and as you are walking through some of it, at times, you can hear several presentations going on at the same time, and it can get a little confusing and stressful after a while.

Apple's stage: large, front and center

At Maxtor, people were having a great deal of fun. The Maxtors kids were trying to get the audience to cheer ("Give me an "M", give me an "A", give me a "X" ...") before announcing to the public the results of a raffle. I let them scan my badge in to have a chance to win the beautiful external hard drive they had on display, but all I got was a free plastic pen that said "Seagate" on one side and "Maxtor" on the other. Oh well, better luck next time, I suppose.

As I meandered through the various exhibitors, I was handed various CD's containing trial versions of software I don't need and documentation I will never have time to read, but it was a good opportunity to go see the new stuff close-up and personal. The Internet vendors do a good job at displaying 3 dimensional pictures nowadays, but it still isn't quite the same thing as being able to touch, smell and look at stuff in person, drool on it a little ... you know what I mean.

But where is the Star of the show hiding? And what's happening under the Big Apple?

Ah, there it is!!! I actually walked right past it once or twice without realizing what it was. And it was easy to do because the case is conveniently set so the device is slightly above eye level for most people, and therefore when it's surrounded by a bunch of people, you can't really see it from a distance. Don't worry, I put a few more pictures of the glorious device right here for those of you who are interested.

Meanwhile, right outside the Exhibition Hall, Greenpace activits who had previously been denied a booth inside MacWorld were, too, trying to get the public's attention about Apple's environmental policies. This is Macworld's response to their message.

But the were not alone. Apparently, these people, too, had a message to send to Apple electronics users. I have not been able to find much of anything on line about this demonstration and the main local news media were not present, but from what I could undestand from the signs they were carrying, these people were there to bring awareness about the working conditions in the factories making Apple products in China.

Does anybody have any information on this protest?

That's all folks. I will not bother you again with MacWorld... until maybe next year? :-)

* * * * *

There are tons of wonderful iPhone pictures available online now.

Also check out Greenpeace's Making Waves and Greenmyapple.org for a little background on the Green Apple protest (these links are in English only).

(Local bloggers who covered the event, let me know and I'll link you right here.)

One of the signs says "Think different, think justice" (or something close to that). It may be part of a long-term weird protest from a janitorial union. Because Apple is so visible, and known (fairly or not) for having a social conscience, they have been targeted by a pro-union service employees group, who try to make it look like Apple is anti-union. I don't remember all the details (I was working at Apple more than 10 years ago). But Apple is not part of the conflict over unionization of service workers, and has nothing to do with the janitors for justice campaign. They're just trying to get some attention by hounding a big company that they have no connection to. They've also been hounding Google, as another big hip company.

Thanks Carolee. Yeah, that makes sense. I was especially wondering why none of the local mainstream news were around to see that. You can see news trucks over there, and there were a fair amount of people taking pictures with professional cameras, but the news people were from a Chinese station as far as I could tell, and the others, who knows. Usually you always see at least one KPIX 5 truck or one of the other local ones show up as soon as a little group of people with a bunch of signs forms, in these areas of the City. Oh, well.

Maitresse: Sure, I love Lattes. But I wasn't there to witness Steve Job's speech in person that particular day, so I wouldn't have gotten anything. I went by the expo a couple of days later, after all the "serious" Mac fans left the scene and the rest of us poor mortals could get somewhat close to the equipment ;)
