Praying for gas prices? / Prier pour le prix de l'essence?
I did not know if I should laugh or cry when I saw this article in the front page of the Chronicle this morning:
Je savais pas si j'allais rire ou pleurer quand j'ai vu cet article en première page dans le journal ce matin:
"Twyman - a community organizer, church choir director and public relations consultant from the Washington, D.C., suburbs - staged a pray-in at a San Francisco Chevron station on Friday, asking God for cheaper gas. He did the same thing in the nation's Capitol on Wednesday, with volunteers from a soup kitchen joining in. Today he will lead members of an Oakland church in prayer.
Yes, it's come to that."

Je fais actuellement des visites de concessionnaires automobiles pour acheter un véhicule dans la Bay Area et le coût du carburant devient l'un des arguments majeurs des vendeurs de petites voitures!
I don't get the Chron on the weekends so I missed this article. My first reaction is "Puhleeeeeze!" High gas prices (well, high by American standards, since I know prices in Europe and the UK have been high for years) are surely affecting lower income families, but praying for lower prices? Aren't there more constructive ways to deal with this?
Didier: J'aimerais bien savoir si la vente de SUV ralentit enfin. On ne peut pas tous conduire des SMART mais quand meme, quelque chose entre les 2 suffit bien à la majorité des gens, non?
Katie: In all fairness, it wasn't in the front page of the printed version of the Chronicle, but online - which is almost as bad. For a minute, there I thought I was reading The Onion.
I first thought, too, that this was a piece right out of The Onion! It is actually quite funny. And God is the one still laughing anyway - he played the greatest joke on mankind by concentrating most of the world's oil reserves in the Middle-East.
Je suis athée et cette scène résume bien la pensée qu'a George Carlin à propos de la prière: si on pense qu'elle sert à quelque chose, c'est de l'arrogance car croire que Dieu changera quoi que ce soit à son grand dessein pour votre misérable vœux, c'est de l'arrogance. Dans le cas contraire, si elle ne sert à rien, pourquoi prier pour commencer?
