Critical Mass - Masse Critique

Do you know Critical Mass? According to this website, "Critical Mass is a monthly bicycle ride to celebrate cycling and to assert cyclists' right to the road."

The idea started in San Francisco in 1992, and quickly spread to other cities all over the world. Apparently, there is even one in Paris, called Velorution.

In San Francisco, Critical Mass starts out at the Ferry Building at the beginning of Market St., every last Friday of the month, at 5:30 p.m.

These pictures were taken - completely by accident, by the way - at 18th Street. The light is not the greatest, sorry.

The last time I was in SF (around Halloween last year, I think) I saw a critical mass ride -- everyone was dressed up in costumes. It was the coolest thing I'd seen in a long time. Minneapolis has a critical mass ride, too.

Some friends of mine do Critical Mass here in New York, and I've heard some crazy stories from them--arrests, fights with cops, etc. I imagine the SF version is far more civilized! :)

Michele: Personally, I think these guys are kind of fun, too; I've seen them in costumes a few times and it wasn't even Halloween :)

Diopter! Long time!!! Good to see you again :-D You raise a good point. Maybe people around here are slightly more laid back, but I'm really not a "critical mass specialist" and I don't know if there were incidents here. I hope not! After all, the cyclists are just having a little fun and the whole thing (if everybody behaves) seems pretty harmless. Of course, guys driving cars caught in the mass (mess) probably don't feel quite the same way ...
