Cabbage patch ... Presidents (!) on eBay

Mieux vaut en rire!
Better laugh about it!

Do you remember the Cabbage Patch dolls? They became extremely popular in the US in the early 80's, so popular that they embodied at the time the quintessential small business success story ...

Well, it looks like a new version of these dolls is out for auction on eBay. I don't know how long this webpage will be up, so I am posting immediately, sincerely hoping that I'm not breaking any eBay rules or whatever.

At the time of this posting, the Sarah Palin doll is going for $716.00 while the McCain doll and the Obama doll are tied at $510.00 Not much demand for the Biden doll, at the moment, I guess, and it is lagging behind at $227.00.

The website says 100% of the profits from this auction is going to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, so if you are feeling charitable today, go ahead and put in a bid! Aww, come on, go ahead and check them out, you know you want to ...

Click here to see the Sarah Palin doll.
Click here to see the John McCain doll.
Click here to see the Joe Biden doll.
Click here to see the Barrack Obama doll.

These auctions will end on ... November 4, 2008 (of course!).

Well, I think it's a cute idea -- give a disadvantaged child a shiny new toy for Christmas in the hopes that he will remember the gift and grow up to be a contributing member of society...

But lets take a closer look at the motives by going to:
http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=4047
to see what Matthew T. Cooper, President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation draws as an annual salary:   $258,000.   Seems a little bit excessive to me.

That's true! On the other hand, Mr. Cooper is making peanuts compared to the CEO of the American Red Cross, according to that same site :(

Thanks for the link, Don.

My guess is that these dolls will not be given to children but purchased by collectors.

Hi Tomate Farcie,

After I wrote that this morning I realized that I've really been "negative" about things recently -- I'm not always this way...

I pulled up that site to see what the CEO of the Red Cross is making, about a half million a year, only double of what Mr. Cooper pulls in -- but who am I to say what a CEO should and should not earn... The fellow probably has a lot of experience in management, and he probably has a lot of valuable "connections" in the fundraising world...

Actually, to be honest, I'm a pretty greedy individual myself, and I've been looking for a way to bring in some extra cash -- so I think I'll try to come up with my own charity, and when I do I'll remember to skim a little bit off the top.

--------------------------

And by the way, I was looking at your photo site again this morning and I think I'm going to link to it also in my sidebar... You always come up with such interesting stuff...

Best regards, Don and Kitty

Does the Palin doll come with $150K wardrobe?

Don:

Thanks for the compliment on the photoblog! I admit I forget about it most of the time and don't keep up with my weekly postings as I should. Maybe I'll put in a few shots this week-end. Also, I have never developped the proper template for it, have never put in any links. There isn't enough time to do all these things.

I wouldn't worry about your previous comment. You're entitlted to your moods. People tend to put way too much emphasis on trying to be happy or positive all the time, if you ask me, and well, it's not always possible. I know I've been more depressed than usual myself, lately, too, and it sometimes translates to more cynical comments or post (shrug).

Don't worry about it is what I'm trying to say. I appreciate the regular visits and the comments, whatever they are, so don't worry. :)

lcmccabe: I don't think so, I think it's just the doll. She's pretty cute and so far, she's getting all the interest.

Maybe I should put in a bid and see if that thing holds its value better than my soon-to-bee Zero-One-K (sigh).
