Gay Campaign in Paris Metro Too Much? (En/Fr)

"What does it change for you? Because to him, it's a big deal."

OK, here is a picture you won't see anytime soon in the Metro in Paris. Why? According to this article in Le Monde (in French, sorry), Metrobus, the agency in charge of managing the Parisian subway ads, decided that these ads were "too shocking for the public at large" ... "especially the segment of the population most attached to traditional values" and requested more subtle ads instead. Rainbow Attitude promptly replaced the "offending" photographs by others, less explicit, to advertise for the annual event, Rainbow Attitude Expo, scheduled for October 21-24, 2005, in Paris at Porte de Versailles.

I wonder why it is so shocking to see a picture like this nowadays? If Spain could recognize same sex marriage, surely certain entities in Paris could come out of the Middle-Age, no?

Also, I can't help wondering why has it's been OK to see nearly naked women advertising for anything under the sun on subway ads and everywhere else for as long as I can remember, but these guys are not OK?!! What's so offensive about them? Who cares!

By the way, if you happen to have a little time on your hands and want to write to Metrobus to let them know that these pictures are not that big a deal, don't hesitate!

Certain things, like censoring these ads (or even prohibiting Muslim women to wear a veil in school) just don't make any sense from my perspective here in the States. What am I missing?

Faut m'expliquer!

Of course, if you have a different opinion or explanation as to why these ads shouldn't come out as they are in the mainstream media, please feel free to comment! In the meantime, I'll say this: come on, Paris, get with the program already!

Let me give it some thought and I'll be back to you.

Ok, je me calme.)

Thanks girls for the friendly and sharp comments.

I know it’s a hard concept to swallow for some people, and I very much appreciate the attitude of the person who says “let me think about it” rather than simply dismissing the idea or making a snap judgment based on some “principle.” I imagine that a post like this one might make some of my readers run away and never come back to my blog, but that’s too bad. In my view, homosexuals are entitled to equal rights, it’s a question of civil rights not some kind of trend that will simply go away with time. I understand if people disagree with me, but that won’t stop me from saying what I have to say! :-) If people can simply thinking about it, that’s all I ask.

(I'll just send this now and chat with NoComment in the next entry.

NoComment: It's always a pleasure to read your comments (and your blog posts, by the way!) so don’t hesitate to come back and write some more! ;-) I had to write this post at least twice because the first version was much too aggressive, and you don't get people to change their mind or even consider your opinion by attacking them, but by trying to reason with them. It’s hard sometimes, though, I know.

I was aggressive at first because I was disappointed. How can Paris, the so-called “cultural center of the world” still be so fucking backwards in some ways?!! And then, I thought, OK, maybe they do have their reasons that I can't understand because I don't live there anymore. But what are they? Is it because of respect for the Muslim population of France? Highly doubtful because then, they would have to take down every naked female breast on every billboard as well. Then what is it?!!! I really wanted someone to explain it to me, but alas, nobody did and nobody probably will since it’s not customary to leave negative posts on people’s blogs.

I think Angelina and Sardinette put their finger on it: it's just plain, simple hypocrisy. Does anybody else have a better idea?

Why? Who cares?!!

Just my 2 cents. Allez, A +

This is what the comment I wrote on Bourgogne's blog on the same topic:

Yes, indeed, WTF?!!? France is so incredibly open to all things having to do with the human body and sexuality, and I thought that, generally, attitudes toward homosexuality were a lot more liberal than in this puritan country where I live. The ban of these posters amazes me ever more since (as is well-known), Bertrand Delanoe, the mayor of Paris, is gay.

On the Muslim veil, I do not have the time to enter the debate seriously enough. All I know is that a friend of mine, whom I highly respect, who teaches in lycee located in a predominantly Muslim suburb of Paris, was adamantly in favor of the French ban on the Islamic veil in public schools. A lot of this has to do with France's history with trying to forge a truly secular state.

The whole thing is absurd to me, and terribly surprising. Come on, France! You're supposed to be the hedonists with the devil-may-care attitude, rolled-up sleeves and a sneer! Sigh. Even with some very strong Catholic roots, it's still baffling. Things seem to have reached a point where people (Americans for sure) are hyper-aware of not offending anyone. I think now that mindset is just imploding and turning on itself and causing more problems. Thus the city of Lights--the beacon for artistry and expression--says no to these benign ads.

Like Elisabeth, I wouldn't have been nearly so surprised if the mayor of Paris were some old guy "bound by tradition", but Delanoe is decidedly not that...

On the veil: I posted the below comment on SuperFrenchie's site a few days ago on the same topic - I'm still torn on the subject, however:

SF: I was extremely torn over this law when it first started being discussed. On one hand, I am American and am used to seeing religious displays of all sorts. I am also trained as a Cultural Anthropologist and simply adore diversity of any type. My initial thoughts were, “shit, who *cares* if they want to come to school with their veils?”

On the other hand, I also believe in the STRONG separation of church and state that France has achieved, and I (as a person who practices no religion whatsoever) have trouble living and functioning well in a society where religious thought is prevalent, influencing even what gets taught in (public!) schools…I can therefore understand the French government wishing to keep religion out of public schools (for all the "official" reasons the government claims and more).

That being said, what changed my mind was my own students here in France. Although I did, on occasion, have female Muslim students who expressed wishes to keep the veil, the overwhelming majority wanted to do away with it, to “fit in” with the mainstream, and to go about the business of being “French”, as this is the country in which they were born and raised.

Several, in fact, confided to me that they were indeed hopeful that the law would pass, as it was not they, but their fathers (or, even sometimes their mothers), who insisted on the veil.

So, with the help of my students, I was finally able to make up my mind (at least to some small extent) about this law - based not on what *I* think should happen, but on what my female Muslim students hoped would happen.

Disclaimer: I am by no means an expert on this law; I can only make up my mind based on the reasoning I have heard up to this point; I assume more information (from both sides) will force me to rethink it - always.

Tomate Farcie: I've added a link to your blog on my own, I hope you don't mind? Keep up the good work!

Well, when it's as dense as most of these comments are, a lot of the French I don't know, and online translators are wonky at best. So I make do.
I wouldn't want you to spend tons of time translating each comment you receive, because you might have to quit your job to have that kind of time, and then I'd feel guilty, hehe. Thanks for looking out for me!

I hope you get the gist of PetitBrin's last comment. You should be able to get most of it if you run it through a place like Babelfish. Bertrand Delanoe is the openly gay mayor of Paris, by the way.

Here is a follow-up for the English speaking people around here.

"PARIS, Sept 28 (AFP) - Paris mayor Bertrand Delanoe on Wednesday condemned a decision by the city's metro and bus operator not to allow advertising posters that show a gay couple kissing.
"The images, which simply depict a kiss between two members of the same sex, in no way justify this act of censorship," the mayor -- who is himself homosexual -- said in a statement.
Metrobus, the advertising subsidiary of state-owned RATP, refused to show the posters for a gay trade show Rainbow Attitude Expo on the grounds that they "risk shocking the public."

Also, this blog (in English) mentioned it as well.

Coucou!
Monsieur Yves Saint Laurent...Alors quoi ??
