Well, if that's the way it's gonna be, let's not talk about it anymore. Did you have a nice week-end? Me too.

A few pictures of Point Richmond

I know it's really hard to tell but behind the Island is a piece of Golden Gate Bridge. Really!

And if you don't know how to get there, just follow the directions on the map.

This ship might still be around if you drive by in a few days, weeks, or months ...

Point Richmond Park -

Here is the little park I was talking about yesterday. It's not very big (especially if you compare it to the Golden Gate Park).

You might see a train ...

Mrs. K's Memorial (Sunday, May 22) (Fr/En)

Point Richmond - Tunnel

You see the tunnel? Well, I went through it many times to go to Mrs. Kay several years ago.

Point Richmond is a small area in Contra Costa County, off the beaten path, in Bay Area. In fact, it's a little bit of color smack in the middle of a heavy, rather unfriendly, industrial area. You take I-580, get off right before the Bay Bridge, drive a few hundred yards, and there you are, right in front of the tunnel, just like in the picture. Right outside of the tunnel, there is a small park near the water from which you can see a piece of skyline of San Francisco and a smaller piece of the Golden Gate Bridge (weather permitting, of course).

If you keep going straight ahead along the park, you'll get to an old ship probably pre-dating WW2. I'm not even sure it's possible to visit it, but you can see it pretty close up and it's quite impressive.

Take a left, keep going along the Marina a little, and take another left, and you'll see the condo where Mrs. K. used to live.

From her deck, Mrs. K could see the top of the boats in the Marina, and the entire Bay spread out at her feet, with San Francisco straight ahead and way in the back.

Mrs. K was the mother of a close friend, and she just died of cancer 3 months ago. Her chidren (who are about my age) had organized a memorial to give some sort of closure to all the people who knew her, since Mrs. K. was not in the States when she died, and nobody got a chance to say good bye.

We all gathered in the large pool-house of the condo association at Mrs. K's, at the very same place where she had celebrated with 100 people (friends and family) her 70th birthday a few years back. This time, about 50 people showed up.

I must say it felt rather awkward to go there again and see all these faces, most of which I hadn't seen in several years.

I had never taken part to a funeral or a memorial in the States, and I had imagined something somewhat somber and very formal, something difficult to experience and depressing. I would lie if I didn't say that almost everybody teared up at some point or another in the afternoon, but the atmosphere was rather casual overall.

Everybody was dressed in summer outfit, very casually. Each person had brought a little something to eat and drink, and the result was an extraordinary buffet. [All those of you who have heard the common stereotype and think American people don't know anything about food, let me tell you, you've never been to one of Mrs. K's affairs!] There were all kinds of people there, very different from one another, from all walks of life. Some were just like Mrs. K., same age and same social background. There were also friends of her children (like me), neighbors, and other people that I never seen before, kids even, including a very young blond, gorgeous baby with a beautiful round face, who spent the entire afternoon playing on the floor with the sun rays without giving a second thought to what was going on at grown up level...

Those who wanted to (and were prepared) got up one after another, and said something about Mrs. K. Most of the stories were funny.

One of Mrs. K's daughters got up and read emails she had received from Canada (where Mrs. K came from) and China (where Mrs. K. had lived for a few years on a whim back in the 80's), from people who were unable to make it but wanted to participate anyway.

And me, for once, I stayed silent. I didn't say a word. Doesn't matter what my relationship with Mrs. K may been when she was alive, I still know one thing: Mrs. K. was an extraordinary woman that nobody is likely to forget for a very long time.

OK. Last year, there were Hearts EVERYWHERE - or so it seemed - in San Francisco, especially in the Financial District. Earlier today I was walking down Market Street and I noticed that one or two of them seemed to be missing. The one in front of Bechtel, for instance. What happened, where did it go?
