Bob Dylan: on remets ça sur PBS/ Back tonight on PBS

In a special "encore", PBS is broadcasting tonight the Martin Scorcese documentary about Bob Dylan we saw earlier this week. Unfortunately, it will air at ... midnight! Well, set your TiVo or VCR's,everybody, cause you don't want to miss it. Or you could get the DVD directly from PBS.

Also, don't miss Elizabeth's commentary (in English). She said it all.

* * * *

Gay Campaign in Paris Metro Too Much? (En/Fr)

"What does it change for you? Because to him, it's a big deal."

OK, here is a picture you won't see anytime soon in the Metro in Paris. Why? According to this article in Le Monde (in French, sorry), Metrobus, the agency in charge of managing the Parisian subway ads, decided that these ads were "too shocking for the public at large" ... "especially the segment of the population most attached to traditional values" and requested more subtle ads instead. Rainbow Attitude promptly replaced the "offending" photographs by others, less explicit, to advertise for the annual event, Rainbow Attitude Expo, scheduled for October 21-24, 2005, in Paris at Porte de Versailles.

I wonder why it is so shocking to see a picture like this nowadays? If Spain could recognize same sex marriage, surely certain entities in Paris could come out of the Middle-Age, no?

Also, I can't help wondering why has it's been OK to see nearly naked women advertising for anything under the sun on subway ads and everywhere else for as long as I can remember, but these guys are not OK?!! What's so offensive about them? Who cares!

By the way, if you happen to have a little time on your hands and want to write to Metrobus to let them know that these pictures are not that big a deal, don't hesitate!

Certain things, like censoring these ads (or even prohibiting Muslim women to wear a veil in school) just don't make any sense from my perspective here in the States. What am I missing?

Faut m'expliquer!

Of course, if you have a different opinion or explanation as to why these ads shouldn't come out as they are in the mainstream media, please feel free to comment! In the meantime, I'll say this: come on, Paris, get with the program already!

Earlier today I took the time to write a post on PC frustration because, well, I was pretty frustrated with my PC. And Blogger went down and ate my entire post just as I was attempting to save it! Figures, doesn't it?!!

PC Frustration... Need I say more, really? Here is the the thing. My main PC at home (the very same one that had to be resurrected from the dead a couple of times already) decided stop communicating with the Internet, just like that, in the middle of the day yesterday. First, I thought I had forgotten to pay the bill. Nope, it wasn't that. The modem works, the cable works, and even the network card works. My computer just doesn't want to see it anymore. Why should it? It doesn't see the CD Rom either (although it sees the CD burner) and only sees my iPod when it feels like it and only after a number of attempts ...

PC = Frustration.

I tried a lot of things and then finally, I picked up the phone and called my techie buddy. "Bring it to my place!" he says. The last thing I want to do is shlepp a 35 lb full-size tower around San Francisco, but hey, at least he offered and I'm desperate. I mean, if I have to run to the coffee shop down the street every time I need a connection, it's gonna get old really fast.

Considering the age of the PC and the fact that I'm ready for a something faster, I had another thought. Instead of calling my buddy on the phone, isn't it time to call ... (drum roll) ... DELL?

DELL?

Why am I bothering you with this? Because a) you've read this far! and b) I know that some of you are very savvy with that kind of stuff. So, I'm asking for your opinions: if you were up for computer renewal, and you wanted a little portability without spending too much and still get something relatively performant, would you go Mac, DELL, others?

Supposing you go with DELL, the big question: Inspiron or Latitude?

Any thoughts, comments?

Earthquake /Tremblement de Terre (En/Fr)

Photograph From http://quake.usgs.gov

I don't know about you but I really don't like to be suddenly awaken in the middle of the night by some loud banging noise. I mean, I don't like it when my neighbor does it (she can't help it, she walks like an elephant), but I really don't like it when an Earthquake does it either! I mean, here you are, minding your own business (in this case snoring peacefully), and all of a sudden, BANG! big noise and jolt, you're up and practically thrown out of bed! Not cool!

I guess it must be nature's way of reminding you to stay humble. For a couple of seconds, last night, while I was laying there in bed waiting for the aftershock, I wondered (but not necessarily in this order): where did I put my damn shoes, my clothes, my wallet, my keys, and whatever else I should be getting in a hurry before I evacuate the building, if I was going to have to evacuate.

Last time I felt an earthquake here, it happened only a couple of kilometers from where I live. It was so loud and the jolt felt so strong that it really reminded me of the1989 one, and I reacted instinctively (maybe not in the best way) ... I was out of the building in a flash, without giving it a second thought and found myself out in the street seconds later, barefoot, with the TV remote (!) still in my hand...

This time, since the Earthquake got me in the middle of the night, I remember considering the outfit was in (or rather, the fact that I wasn't wearing one!) and wondering if I was going to have to get out the building looking like that draped in a blanket or something?!

And the aftershock came at last, very mild, barely a light jolt, and eventually I went back to sleep... but not without first having a very long thought for the Katrina victims, and another one for Rita due to hit Texas within hours, and finally and perhaps most importantly, I remember thinking how insignificant and powerless we, individuals, really are when facing the forces of Nature, and how quickly we tend to forget it. I remember also thinking "We're OK ... this time!" and "Hey, I should probably blog that tomorrow morning for the others, that should interest them" and then finally I let go and went back to sleep.

One down! Still waiting for the "Big One."

Et un tremblement de terre, un! On attends toujours le “Big One”.

Manhattan Subway Baby/Bébé Métro New-York (En/Fr)

Photograph from EBay Seller "Linagem79"

Remember the iPodified babies? Well, when I was writing my post on the Subway iPods, earlier today, look what I found on eBay. You don't have a subway map on you? No problem, just put it on the baby! I'm surprised the GAP didn't think of that yet.

* * * *

I doubt if I'll ever come up with anything quite like these iPodified babies. However, when I was doing the research on the Nano the other day, I came across this site and completely forgot to link it to my post... For those of you who do have iPods and are interested, this site allows you to donwload the subway map of every major city in the world! Well, almost.

I haven't been able to try it yet, though, seeing that my old home computer and my iPod don't get along lately and refuse to communicate with each other most of the time (long story). But it seems easy enough. The site even includes a FAQ section.

Nifty little thing, isn't it? If you like it and you want to support the concept, you can make a small donation via Paypal. If you like it but you're poor (after purchasing an iPod, that's understandable) you can always click a few times on the Google ads.

* * * * *

iPod Nano (Fr/En)

English Version below

Photograph from : www.generationmp3.com

* * * * *

The big mystery is over and as of last week, the new kid on the block, iPod Nano, has landed on the market. Personally, I was disappointed. Aside from the aesthetic of the device (but with Apple, we've almost come to expect it by now) and the flash memory replacing the hard-drive (certainly a step in the right direction considering iPod is a hand-held device people are expected to walk around with), does iPod Nano really bring you something more than another MP3 player, including its older brother iPod?

I had really hoped for a combination of a BlackBerry and the original iPod ... Now THAT would have been interesting and I would have flown, not walked, to the Apple store! Oh, well.

Also see the PC Mag article here. PC Mag gave the iPod Nano an Editor's Choice award.

What do you think?

9/11 - Le 11 Septembre (En/Fr)

(Version Française en dessous)

I couldn't let this date pass without mentioning it, even if only a little. Everybody all over the world has already seen a vast amount of documentaries and footage about 9/11, so I won't try to say a whole lot. What else could I possibly add? Just one small thing, though.

When I think about 9/11, an interview of Ada L. Huxtable apparently conducted in 1966 but seen on PBS a couple of years ago comes to mind. The words I heard Ms. Huxtable say chilled me so much at the time that I immediately went on line to look up the original transcript on PBS and make sure I heard her right. I did.

See for yourself:

"Who's afraid of the big, bad buildings? Everyone, because there are so many things about gigantism that we just don't know. The gamble of triumph or tragedy at this scale -- and ultimately it is a gamble -- demands an extraordinary payoff. The Trade Center towers could be the start of a new skyscraper age or the biggest tombstones in the world." Ada L. Huxtable, 1966

What do you think?

One more thing before I go: I want to express my most sincere condoleances to all the people of New York who got hit the hardest on that day. I feel for you.

Also see: Ada L. Huxtable for a brief biography.

More photographs about 9/11 available here

Additional info about Ground Zero here.

* * * * *

(Ada Huxtable etait "architecture critic" for the New York Times (1963–82).

A Year in the Merde /Un an dans la m.... (En/Fr)

(Version Française En Dessous)

Once in a while, when I need cheering up, I buy myself a little something on Ebay. Last week, I found this book (photo above), sure to please my American expat buddies (especially those who happen to live in Paris) and all those of you who have had the pleasure (or the misfortune) to visit my hometown in the past...

The book is called A year in the Merde. It's the story of a British guy arriving to live and work in Paris for a year. There are a few excerpts right here on Amazon.com.

Or course, I haven't read the book yet, but as far as I can tell, it certainly promises to be funny.

A word of warning though: if you tend to take yourself too seriously or don't have a sense of humor, don't bother.

I don't know if a French translation has been published yet.

Happy reading!

* * * * * * *

Le livre s'appelle A year in the Merde.

Bonne lecture!

Back at work / Retour au boulot (En/Fr)

(Version Française en dessous)

It was nice to have a day off yesterday (Labor Day), but now we get to play catch up! So I may not have much time to post to the blog between now and the end of the week. Just a few words for today.

First thing this the morning, I got to purchase a server from DELL for the firm. It starts out inexpensive enough, but by the time you've finished customizing it to your liking, purchasing the licenses, warranty, etc., it's a different story! I certainly hope the thing works better than some of the workstations we already have.

I asked if they'd throw in a free Laptop with the server, what the heck, you don't know until you ask, right? Alas, they said no. They shaved $200 off the total amount though.

Always try to negotiate with them, they seem to be quite used to it and they usually will try to make some kind of effort; they might throw in a little memory here or a small upgrade there... every little bit helps, non? True, your computer will be obsolete in 6 months anyway whatever the configuration, but isn't it a good feeling when you open the box and smell that brand new computer smell ...

The frustration doesn't start until after you plug it in...

Talk to you all real soon.

* * * * *

A bientot.

Pas de nouvelles, bonnes nouvelles/ No news, good news! (Fr/En)

English version below

This post is mostly for those of you who have come to rely on this blog to see how I'm doing when I don't write or phone.

I'm OK, but right now I can't post anything because I don't feel that great and I need to rest. Don't worry, nothing real serious (just some kind of upper-respiratory infection?), but the doctor hasn't found anything better to give me than something that also prevents me from sleeping! I guess I'll just have to stick it out for a few days until it blows over. But right now, I feel tired, irritable, and generally not in a very good mood (yes, worse than usual), so I'd rather keep to myself until I feel better.

Earlier today I was at my coffee shop relaxing in a corner as I do every Saturday morning, reading the news and checking out the blogs I visit on a regular basis, when I came across this article by Pascal Riche (in French), about New Orleans. That piece really got to me and all of a sudden, I was in tears. It's really silly, but I couldn't stop at all! That's when I decided that I better not write anything on my blog this week-end while in this frame of mind.

So if you'll excuse me ... I shoud be back online very soon.
