Happy Holidays Everybody! (Fr/En)

Piece of Christmas Tree @ Union Square, SF

I was going to offer you (again!) this tasteless joke that never fails to get everybody to laugh (do you know the one that explains so well why the Angel always end up with a Xmas tree up his/her butt every year?) but at the last moment, I changed my mind. After all, my parents read my blog (apparently), so anyway, I thought I'd give you instead a translation of this gorgeous text interpreted by Edith Piaf around the 50's but still so relevant, unfortunately.

Ice Skating Rink in Front of Ferry Building, SF

I hope her estate won't mind my sharing these words with you on Xmas eve (or rather that of the gentleman who wrote the words in question). And for once, I tried to stay a little bit more true to the words with my translation. I don't think my English version looks as good as the original text, though, so if there is anything one of you want to contribute in order to make it more accurate, please don't hesitate.

Le Noël de la rue - Christmas of the Street

Paroles: Henri Contet, Musique: M. Heyral
© 1951 - Editions Beuscher

Petit bonhomme où t'en vas-tu
Courant ainsi sur tes pieds nus
Je cours après le Paradis
Car c'est Noël à ce qu'on dit...

Hey, little guy, where are you going,
Running around barefoot?
I'm running after Paradise,
'cuz they say it's Christmas...

Le Noël de la rue
C'est la neige et le vent
Et le vent de la rue
Fait pleurer les enfants
La lumière et la joie
Sont derrière les vitrines
Ni pour toi, ni pour moi
C'est pour notre voisine
Mon petit, amuse-toi bien
En regardant, en regardant
Mais surtout, ne touche à rien
En regardant de loin

Christmas of the Street
Is snow and wind
And the wind in the street
Makes the children cry
Light and joy
Are behind the shops' windows
Not for you, nor for me
But for our neighbor
Little one, go have fun looking
Just looking
But don't touch anything
Just look from afar

Le Noël de la rue
C'est le froid de l'hiver
Dans les yeux grands ouverts
Des enfants de la rue
Collant aux vitres leurs museaux
Tous les petits font le gros dos
Ils sont blottis comme des Jésus
Que Sainte Marie aurait perdus

Christmas of the Street
Is the winter cold
In the wide open eyes
Of the street kids
Sticking their noses to the shops' windows
All the little ones are huddled together
Like a bunch of little Jesus’s
That Saint Mary would have lost

Le Noël de la rue
C'est la neige et le vent
Et le vent de la rue
Fait pleurer les enfants
Ils s'en vont reniflant,
Ils s'en vont les mains vides
Nez en l'air et cherchant
Une étoile splendide

The Christmas of the Street
Is snow and wind
And the wind in the street
Makes the children cry
They go away, runny nose
Empty handed
Looking up in the stars
For the Special One

Mon petit, si tu la vois
Tout en marchant bien droit
Le Noël de la rue
C'est au ciel de leur vie
Une étoile endormie
Qui n'est pas descendue

Little one if you see it
Walk straight ahead
Christmas of the Street
Is a sleeping star
In the sky of their life
That never came down
