Bay to Breakers

Bay to Breakers 2008

Approximately 65,000 people showed up for Bay To Breakers in San Francisco yesterday, despite the heat wave (temperature in the 90's), and the promised crack-down on alcohol and public urination.

Bay to Breakers is an annual 7.6 miles foot race, starting at one end of San Francisco, and ending on the other side of the City, "where breakers crash at Ocean Beach."(Wikipedia) For some it is a serious running race; for the vast majority, it is an opportunity to dress up in wild costumes, hang-out with friends, and party.

That day, you will see people drinking in the streets and nobody try to stop them. Well, at least that was the way it was for years and years. Last year, however, some of the kids *really* went overboard and really trashed the course by leaving a *huge* mess behind and urinating everywhere, and I do mean everywhere!! So this year, the City had to step in and attempt to curb the excess somewhat.

I'm not very good at taking photographs in a crowd, but the local paper has a few good ones right here. The photographs above and below were taken during last year's Bay to Breakers.

Bay to Breakers ... reminder!

Just a reminder to all of you expats, bloggers, photographers, and whoever else wants to have some fun this WE in the Bay Area ... this Sunday (5/18/08) is Bay to Breakers again, so grab your gear and get ready to par-té.

Registration is still open and if you want a preview of what to expect, click here or check out the local papers on line.

FYI, the fee to run the course this year is ... $44!!! (Might be cheaper to drive to the finish line, uh? Good luck parking, though.)

Anyway, see you there!

"Bay to Breakers"

Hayes Street

This week-end, the 98th annual Bay to Breakers foot race took place again in San Francisco. I didn't have the courage to get up at 5:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning to bring you my very own pictures of the event, but there are plenty of photographs all over the net by now, so you shouldn't have any difficulty finding them. The pictures on this post are from the San Francisco Chronicle (also click there to see additional photographs and full article).

Oh, and of course, what would the Bay to Breakers be without the Bare to Breakers (careful when you click on that website, it launches a very loud sound file.) Anyway, hope you all had a very nice week-end.
