Bloggers' Meeting in Paris June 8 or 9 / Rencontre de Blogueurs à Paris 8 ou 9 Juin

This post is being created to allow those of us who wish to meet in Paris on June 8 or June 9, 2006, to discuss in one central place arrangements, location, etc., because right now, I think emails are floating around and comments are being left on multiple blog posts, which are making it very hard to follow any developments.

J'ouvre ce billet pour permettre à ceux qui ont envie de participer à une rencontre de blogueurs (et d'amis de PDP) d'échanger des informations pratique sur un seul endroit, car pour le moment il y a des emails qui circulent dans tous les sens et des commentaires sur des billets variés, peut-être même sur different blogs, et on n'arrive plus à s'y retrouver!

I'm guessing that Eric, of Paris Daily Photo will probably take over at some point, and if he does, I will forward this entire blogpost to him when he's ready. In the meantime, go ahead and RSVP or send ideas to this blog post and I'll update it accordingly in the next few days.

Critical Mass - Masse Critique

Do you know Critical Mass? According to this website, "Critical Mass is a monthly bicycle ride to celebrate cycling and to assert cyclists' right to the road."
Vous connaissez Masse Critique? D'après ce site, "Masse Critique est un rassemblement mensuel de cyclistes dont le but est de célèbrer et d'affirmer et leur droit à la route."



The idea started in San Francisco in 1992, and quickly spread to other cities all over the world. Apparently, there is even one in Paris, called Velorution.
L'idée commença à San Francisco en 1992, et s'est répandue rapidement dans d'autres villes dans le monde entier. Apparemment, il y en a même un à Paris qu'on appelle Velorution.


In San Francisco, Critical Mass starts out at the Ferry Building at the beginning of Market St., every last Friday of the month, at 5:30 p.m.
A San Francisco, le rassemblement de départ est au Ferry Building, au début de la rue Market, tous les derniers Vendredis du mois à 17h30.

Salade "Chinois" (En/Fr)

The other day I was telling you that I went to pick-up a salad at the Macy's basement near Union Square. Look carefully at the name of the salad (5th one on the left row): "Chinois Chicken" with the mention "pronounce 'sheen-wa'" right next to it (double-click on the picture to enlarge).

L'autre jour je vous disais que j'étais partie chercher une salade chez Macy's près de Union Square. Regardez bien le nom du plat (5eme nom sur la colonne de gauche) "Poulet Chinois" ou ils ont laissé le mot "Chinois" en Français avec un petit mot à coté pour bien expliquer aux Anglo-Saxons comment prononcer "Chinois" (cliquer sur la photo pour agrandir).

Awwww... and they say American people don't like French people! ;-)
Ahhhhhh.... et on dit que les Américains n'aiment pas les Français! ;-)

(PS. I tried it, by the way, and it was pretty good!)

Castro's Irises / Les Fleurs de Castro

If you have been to Castro lately, you may have noticed the following display (below) on the walls of the bank at the angle of Castro and 18th Street (note the cute little Victorians reflected in the window).

Si vous avez été vous promener à Castro dernierement, vous avez sans doute remarqué ce visuel (ci-dessous) sur les mur de la banque à l'angle de Castro et de la 18ème rue (notez la reflection des petites maisons Victoriennes sur la fenêtre).





The display is a memorial to all the people who have lost their lives to AIDS in the last 25 years. The pieces of paper you see here are from people who have lost a loved one or who wish to reinforce their commitment to fight the disease.

Le visuel est un commémoratif pour tous ceux qui ont perdu la vie à cause du SIDA depuis les dernières 25 années. Les morceaux de papiers que vous voyez ont été ajoutés par ceux qui ont perdu quelqu'un ou qui souhaitent renouveler leur engagement d'une façon ou d'une autre contre la maladie.

There are dozens of large beautiful fabric irises hanging from the lampposts along the main street as a part of the project. The iris has been chosen as symbol of healing and hope.

Des douzaines de fleurs en tissu énormes et superbes ont été accrochées aux réverbères dans la rue principale, et font sans doute partie du projet. La fleur en question a été choisie pour représenter l'espoir et la guérison.

Is my computer a cat? Est-ce que mon ordi est un chat?

They say cat have 9 lives. What about my computer? I've resurrected this old box from the dead at least twice already. Yet, last week, it started losing its internet connectivity until it finally completely refused to light up for me at all. Totally dead and unresponsive. That's 3 times, now! And each time, I always wonder if it's taken its last breath, poor thing. Some "praying" usually follows before I pop the hood up and stick my fingers in there because, of course, I haven't backed up my data in ages...

On dit que les chats ont 9 vies. Et mon ordinateur? J'ai déjà ressucité ce vieux clou au moins deux fois. Et pourtant, la semaine dernière, il a encore donné des mauvais signes.. d'abord, il a commencé par perdre sa connexion internet, et finalement ce matin il ne voulait plus rien savoir. Complètement mort. Aie, ça fait 3 fois maintenant! Et à chaque fois, je me demande toujours s'il a enfin rendu l'âme, le pauvre. Une petite "prière" suit généralement avant que je l'ouvre enfin et mette mes doigts dedans, car bien sur je n'ai pas fait de sauvegarde depuis un siècle ...

So today, instead of going to the Bay to Breakers as originally planned and take pictures for you (which I just know some other local bloggers did anyway - and tomorrow morning, all I'll have to do is link them here for you ;-), anyway, I was saying, I just stayed home instead and worked on my computer most of the morning. With a combination of determination, skill, and especially luck (95%), I got the thing working again so here I am again.

Alors au lieu d'aller au Bay to Breakers comme j'avais prévu et de vous prendre des photos (ça fait rien, car je sais que d'autres bloggeurs du coin y sont allés aujourd'hui et demain matin je n'aurai rien de plus à faire que de vous mettre les liens vers leurs blogs ;-), enfin bref, je disais, je suis restée à la maison et je me suis occupée de l'ordi presque toute la matinée. Avec de la determination, du talent, et surtout de la chance (95%), j'ai fini par faire marcher le truc alors me voici de nouveau.

What did I miss by not going to Bay to Breakers? Well, lots of fun, I'm sure, but also ... this!

Apple just opened a store earlier today on 5th Avenue, New York. Its new neighbors? Prada, Tiffany, Saks 5th Ave...

Apple vient juste d'ouvrir un magasin aujourd'hui sur la 5eme Avenue, New York. Ses nouveaux voisins? Prada, Tiffany, Saks 5th Avenue...

Despite all the bitching, groaning and complaining I've done in the past on this blog about my iPod, Apple tech support and one of their recent ad campaign, don't get me wrong, I still think it's quite admirable that a company that started in a California garage 30 years ago now manages to open up a store on 5th Avenue, NY, with the big league.

Malgré tous les grognements, toutes les plaintes, et commentaires plus ou moins bien placés que je me suis permis de faire sur ce blog à propos de mon iPod, du tech support chez Apple, et de leur dernière campagne publicitaire que j'avais trouvé d'un gout douteux ... ne vous y trompez quand même pas, je trouve admirable qu'une entreprise qui a démarré dans un garage de Californie il y a environ 30 ans sois maintenant capable d'ouvrir un magasin sur la 5ème Avenue, avec les grands.


And what a store! Let's just say it, Apple knows EVERYTHING about aesthetics and again, it shows! Well done, and congratulations, guys!

Et quel magasin!!! Ah, il faut bien le dire, pour ce qui est de l'ésthétique, ils sont tres fort chez Apple, et cette fois encore, ils nous le montrent bien! Bravo, et félications les gars!

A bit of personal news ... I am going to be in Paris next month for a brief visit with my family. I am also really hoping to meet some of my new Parisian Internet buddies while I'm there, if time permits. Don't worry, I should be able to post a few more San Francisco pictures before I leave... and it looks like I'll be taking the computer with me to France... so, who knows what you might get in the next few weeks ... ;-)

Quelques nouvelles ... je serai à Paris le mois prochain pour une visite de courte durée avec ma famille. J'espère de tout coeur pouvoir aussi rencontrer mes amis de la Toile qui habitent en région parisienne pendant que j'y suis, si il y a assez de temps. Ne vous inquietez pas, je devrais avoir le temps de poster quelques photos de San Francisco avant de partir ... et puis on dirait que je vais devoir emporter l'ordinateur avec moi en France alors on sait jamais ce qui risque d'atterir sur le blog dans les semaines qui viennent ... ;-)

Cody's Bookstore of Berkeley To Close / Librairie Cody de Berkeley Ferme (En/Fr)

This quick post is for all the book lovers, for my brother, and all the others I had to drive to Cody's Bookstore in Berkeley over the years, so they could buy the technical books they had a hard time finding in France, at the time. Apparently, the store can no longer compete with larger chain stores and the Internet, and will be forced to close its doors after 43 years. Sad news. For the locals, it's going to feel like we're taking down a major landmark, which it totally is. Sorry, guys.

Ce billet rapide est pour tous ceux qui aiment les livres, pour mon frère et tous les autres que j'ai du accompagner à Berkeley au cours des années pour qu'ils puissent aller chercher chez Cody's Bookstore les bouquins techniques qu'ils n'arrivaient pas à touver en France à l'époque. Apparemment, la librairie ne peut plus rester en competition avec les grosses chaines et les ventes sur Internet, et va être obligée de fermer ses portes apres 43 ans de service. Comme c'est triste. Pour les gens du coin, c'est comme si on démolissait leur Tour Eiffel, car c'en est une. Mauvaise nouvelle, ce soir, désolée.

Remember our immigration rallies in the States a few days ago? Well, I thought some of you guys might be interested to see what the San Francisco Chronicle wrote about what's going on in France regarding the recent Sarkozy bill on immigration lately.

Immigrants Rally in San Francisco (En/Sp... oops, I meant Fr)

Thousands of people came to march down Market Street, San Francisco, as they did in many other cities across the country today, to observe the nationwide rally over immigration rights and get their voice heard. Many of the signs were in English, this time, and most of the people looking at the demonstration appeared to be far more receptive to the immigrants' message than they had been during the protests held a few weeks ago, when most of the signs and messages were mostly all in Spanish.

Des milliers de gens sont venus marcher sur Market Street, San Francisco, comme ils l'ont fait dans beaucoup de villes à travers le pays aujourd'hui, pour observer un ralliement national et faire entendre leur voix sur les droit des immigrants. Cette fois-ci, les panneaux en Anglais étaient tres nombreux, et les gens qui regardaient passer les manifestants avaient l'air beaucoup plus ouverts au message qu'il ne l'avaient été pendant les manifestations d'il y a quelques semaines, tout en Espagnol.








Even the police appeared to be in good mood, and the weather was perfectly nice, maybe even a little too hot. But nobody was complaining about that and people were dressed appropriately, most of them wearing a white T-shirt with the US Flag on it saying "Unidos Nos Quedamos" (We stay together?). See, I'm learning!

Meme la police avait l'air décontractée, et le beau temps était au rendez-vous, il faisait d'ailleurs meme un peu trop chaud. Mais personne n'avait l'air de se plaindre, d'ailleurs les gens avaient prévu pour et s'étaient vétus légerement, la plupart portant un T-shirt blanc avec un drapeau Americain qui disait "Unidos Nos Quedamos" (Nous restons ensemble?). Vous voyez, j'apprends!
